Attendance Policy:

Classroom attendance is essential to the learning experience and is required by the California Education Code and HBUHSD Board Policies. The following policy guidelines for attendance have been adopted and will be uniformly enforced at Marina High School: Marina High School’s attendance policy gives students a maximum of five (5) days to excuse an absence. Absences may be cleared with a parent/guardian phone call or with a note from the parent/guardian.

Clearing of absences:

  • The parent/guardian who signed the school signature card may call in to clear an absence. Please provide the student’s first and last name, school ID number, date and period of absence and reason for the absence. Unless an absence is cleared within five (5) school days, the absence will be recorded as a truancy; no changes can be made in the attendance record after five (5) days. Please do not leave a message on voice mail. You must speak directly with an attendance clerk.
  • The student is to bring a note, in ink, from the parent(s) or guardian(s) who signed the school signature card. The note, with the student’s first and last name, school ID number, date and periods of absence, and reason for this absence must be put in the BOX at the Attendance Windows, located in the back of the Administration Office. Unless an absence is cleared with a parent note within five (5) days, the absence will be recorded as a truancy; no changes can be made in the attendance record after five (5) days. It is the student’s responsibility to get the note from the parent and make sure it gets turned in.
  • Students who are absent (excused) frequently due to illness may be referred to the nurse and doctor’s notes may be required.

The policy for any student leaving campus is as follows:

  • Prior to leaving campus, students must bring a note to the attendance counter and obtain a checkout permit.
  • Students are not allowed to leave campus without checking out through the Attendance Office or the Health Office. If they leave without checking out, they will receive a truancy that will not be cleared.
  • Junior or Senior students who leave campus at lunchtime using a valid lunch pass and do not return to school fifth period due to illness must bring a written note from the parent or guardian. The note must indicate the sudden illness within the required five (5) days or a truancy will be recorded. If it is necessary for a parent to call the Attendance Office with questions regarding their student’s attendance, please use the student’s last name, in order to reach the appropriate attendance clerk.

A-L – Students ………. Ext. 4426

M-Z - Students ………. Ext. 4428

Students who have an all-day truancy (1) or a total of five (5) period truancies will not be allowed to attend school activities. For example, a student who has the above truancy or period truancies from the first day of school up until the Homecoming Dance clearance period will not be allowed to attend the dance. From the date of the dance clearance period a student must not have another (1) all-day truancy or compile five (5) period truancies or he/she may not attend the next activity and so on throughout the year.

Any all day truancy will result in a Saturday School assignment. Saturday School does not clear the truancy but is a discipline measure only. Students who do not attend an assigned Saturday school will be suspended. Students who continually defy authority will be suspended, have lunch passes and parking privileges revoked.

Students will excessive “health excused” or “parent request” absences will be referred to an administrator and doctor’s notes may be required.
